On September 8th, Maya Mathias, Remyson Caldera, and Lisa Koppes from the GreenKidz Foundation traveled to Aruba to introduce the GreenKidz mosquito prevention program, “Give Mosquitoes No Chance,” to the ABC Islands! Maya Mathias, GreenKidz creator and coordinator, looks back on a very successful business trip, which left her eager for more.

Mathias: “It has been my dream for years to share our green educational programs with all the islands in the Dutch Caribbean so they are accessible to everyone, and it’s fantastic that there is so much enthusiasm for it now.”
Sustainable Collaboration in the Dutch Caribbean
Mathias: “This work trip has been in the planning for a long time! With support from the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and coordinator Marieta Braks of the capacity building program ‘MoBoCon’ (Mosquito-Borne Control), we have finally made it a success. Over the past few days, we trained eight highly committed and skilled members of the vector and health promotion teams from the ABC Islands in using our educational mosquito prevention program, ‘Give Mosquitoes No Chance.’ We then immediately implemented this program with the team at the Aruban primary school ‘Colegio Santa Famia,’ and it went surprisingly well.”
Mathias: “It’s great to see that our educational program is also resonating with schools in Aruba and that local professionals can work with it effectively.” In the wrap-up session of the GreenKidz work trip, all delegations from the ABC Islands expressed their desire for sustainable collaboration in the future, both with each other and with GreenKidz, in delivering mosquito prevention workshops and educational activities for primary schools. Mathias: “Each island has its own system and teams for mosquito prevention, and it’s important to explore how our program fits into that, as well as how the islands can share their own knowledge and experiences with one another!”
The GreenKidz work trip to Aruba was professionally coordinated by the Public Health Service (DVG). Luis Chong, director of the Mosquito Control Division of DVG Aruba, who was closely involved in the GreenKidz exchange project, hopes to extend the collaboration. His wish is for the GreenKidz team to develop more green educational materials for Aruba and to train more local teachers from the ‘Skol Salubridat’ health program in GreenKidz’s educational programs.
After the successful trip to Aruba, another work trip is planned. In January 2025, the GreenKidz team will likely travel to Sint Eustatius to share the ‘Give Mosquitoes No Chance’ program with professionals from Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius, and Saba, and implement it in English-speaking schools and after-school programs. Mathias: “In April 2025, we proudly celebrate our ten-year anniversary. Then, 10 years after the founding of GreenKidz on Curaçao, we can finally say, ‘GreenKidz goes Caribbean!'”
